Protecting ISS gear from radiation, diamonds

How do people ensure that electronics in space are safe? Well, protecting people is one thing, and this is another. Amazingly, and it probably sounds too good to be true, one of the materials that is used is...Sapphire! Yes. That's right; Sapphire, as in, a rare earth mineral that one might use for ornamental purposes. In modern times, sapphire can be grown in a lab in pretty large slabs, or crystals, measuring at least an inch or more in diameter, and being roughly one foot long. Diamonds can also be produced in the same way, except I don't think it's really solid diamond. So they take the slab and cut it into slices, after which they coat the mineral with silicon. Have you ever wondered why people consider sapphire to be a "magic" rock, or why precious stones can make you're mood better. Well, I guess there you have it; it's ability (sapphire) to block just about 100 percent of all radiation! Diamonds are also an interesting rock. They can be used in powerful electron microscopes due to their conductive ability. They are heated after which they can be used to focus electrons down into a narrow beam. Now; that's one incredibly powerful laser. No wonder that they're so valuable, even though that's probably just because of how rare they are. I never would've guessed that there's more to it than that! Now; I really want to invest in them diamonds.
